Etching - Art inspired by David Teata (NZ Artist)

In Room 18 this week, we have been studying the work of New Zealand Artist, David Teata.  He uses his Cook Island heritage to inspire his pacific themed art, which represents the people, ocean and natural surrounds of the pacific region. He etches his artwork, which is very similar to scratch-art.  Room 18 have been planning their deliberate acts of art by planning and recrafting  ideas. In the photos, we have used bamboo sticks and whiteboard markers  for our practise but you will have to wait and see what our final work will look like at the Art Exhibition in Week 10.  Ka kite for now.

Inventing Tenting - Design Process

For Maths today, Room 18 have been building paper tents from the Figure It Out activity called, Inventing Tenting.  Room 18 were able to work either alone, with a partner or in a small group to create their tent.  This was super enjoyable, and was great to see different skills and strategies being used. Some chose to meticulously plan, some worked with paper folding and some got straight into cutting and taping.  One question which arose was, how do you create a cone shape? Alucious was able to work out how to make a cone! In Room 18 we would love to hear your comments and questions about our learning.  Room 18 will also be adding comments about how they made their tent. In Room 18, we have been reading about the history of telescopes. Did you know that a telescope was originally a toy? It wasn't until Galilei Galileo decided to make a real one!. We made a type of telescope, called a kaleidoscope, which uses the reflective powers of light and mirrors to create a visual feast for the eyes. If you visit individual blogs (Kruthen & Semith) they have added to the experience by adding some house music.
