Inventing Tenting - Design Process

For Maths today, Room 18 have been building paper tents from the Figure It Out activity called, Inventing Tenting.  Room 18 were able to work either alone, with a partner or in a small group to create their tent.  This was super enjoyable, and was great to see different skills and strategies being used. Some chose to meticulously plan, some worked with paper folding and some got straight into cutting and taping.  One question which arose was, how do you create a cone shape? Alucious was able to work out how to make a cone!

In Room 18 we would love to hear your comments and questions about our learning.  Room 18 will also be adding comments about how they made their tent.

Here are our meticulous planners!

Tariq did a lot of paper folding to work out his design. He also created a shade sail.

The Pak 'n Save tent with curved roof!

Alucious created this cone roof and was the first person to get his tent up!

Karen wasn't sure but kept trying

Katherine and Isobel creating a net - what will it look like in 3d?

  4. Hi I´m Jolina and I have made a tent out of cardboard whitepaper and mad them a round and stucked them in four corners with tape. and twisted white and pink pipe cleaners and added them on the top so I could hold with a handle, and put a blue shade that is connected with the roof. I loved making it and getting to stick things on, and have different ideas that would suit and make it look nice.I learnt that you need to measure cause then It won´t look right and wouldn´t be even. It was kind of challenging getting EVERY single measurement right but it was fun and Its looking pretty good.

  7. Hi I am Auri and I made a tent by myself, I made it out of brown cardboard paper and tape. My tent is strong enough to hold itself up. I learnt that making 3D tents out of 2D nets is a real challenge. My tent is a small one person tent it is sturdy I really like it. I am proud of myself for making a tent.

  8. Hi Isobel and Katherine here and today for math in room 18 we did tent making we made our ten out of different shapes such as squares and circles, We kinda failed at our plan but oh well today we learnt that tent making is a very difficult task and you need good teamwork to complete it :) We also learnt that you need to take your time but not too much time otherwise you won't complete it all with in the time you are given welp adios! :)

  9. Hi I'm Ana and I made two tent's with my friend Janelle with paper, strong thin sticks and tape. We learnt by making mistakes helped us of what we had done wrong and what we can do better next time. If we did not learn from our mistakes we would not figure out how to do it next time. A challenge we faced was putting the miniature tent together. Although it was hard we still learnt from our mistakes but we still had fun.

  11. Hi it's me Melody Calais and Julianna. Today we are creating tents that involves sticks three tips of paper witch is brown paper., coloured paper, and some white peaces of papers, and also some pip cleaners to decorate your tent so it will look even better then it look's. Why we made this tent design because our teacher thought that we could try new things for maths in room 18. A challenge we faced was all of us working on it at once because it is suck a small object luckily we did well and I hope we get to do it again. What was challenging was when we measured the tent's and we were working as a team and it was a bit of a job to do for us.

  15. Well done room 18 , I really like how you guys worked with your minds to create this 3D shape even I won´t be able to make that 3D shape . If you want to make it more beautiful you could do double 3D but all you work is perfect .
